We present a general framework for studying strongly coupled radiative and conductive heat transfer between arbitrarily shaped bodies separated by subwavelength distances. Our formulation is based on a macroscopic approach that couples our recent fluctuating volume-current (FVC) method of near-field heat transfer to the more well-known Fourier conduction transport equation, in which case the former can induce temperature gradients throughout the bodies. Although the FVC framework can in principle be applied to arbitrary geometries, in practice it is most applicable in situations where only one of the bodies undergoes significant temperature gradients. To illustrate the capabilities of this framework, we consider an idealized, proof-of-concept geometry involving two aluminum-zinc oxide nanorods separated by a vacuum gap, with one of the rods heated by a large-temperature reservoir on one side while the other is held at room temperature. We show that the presence of bulk nanorod polaritonic resonances can result in very large radiative heat transfer rates (roughly five times larger than what is achievable in the planar configuration) and leads to nonlinear temperature profiles.

The well established phenomenon of ribosome drop-off plays crucial roles in translational accuracy and nutrient starvation responses during protein translation. When cells are under stress conditions, such as amino acid starvation or aminoacyl-tRNA depletion due to a high level of recombinant protein expression, ribosome drop-off can substantially affect the efficiency of protein expression. Here we introduce a mathematical model that describes the effects of ribosome drop-off on the ribosome density along the mRNA and on the concomitant protein synthesis rate. Our results show that ribosome premature termination may lead to non-intuitive ribosome density profiles, such as a ribosome density which increases from the 5' to the 3' end. Importantly, the model predicts that the effects of ribosome drop-off on the translation rate are mRNA-specific, and we quantify their resilience to drop-off, showing that the mRNAs which present ribosome queues are much less affected by ribosome drop-off than those which do not. Moreover, among those mRNAs that do not present ribosome queues, resilience to drop-off correlates positively with the elongation rate, so that sequences using fast codons are expected to be less affected by ribosome drop-off. This result is consistent with a genome-wide analysis of S. cerevisiae, which reveals that under favourable growth conditions mRNAs coding for proteins involved in the translation machinery, known to be highly codon biased and using preferentially fast codons, are highly resilient to ribosome drop-off. Moreover, in physiological conditions, the translation rate of mRNAs coding for regulatory, stress-related proteins, is less resilient to ribosome drop-off. This model therefore allows analysis of variations in the translational efficiency of individual mRNAs by accounting for the full range of known ribosome behaviours, as well as explaining mRNA-specific variations in ribosome density emerging from ribosome profiling studies.

AlPO4-17, known as the oxide with the highest negative thermal expansion (NTE), was studied under high pressure by angle-dispersive X-ray diffraction (XRD), mid- and far-infrared (IR) spectroscopy. Upon increasing pressure, the closure of the (P–O–Al) angle destabilizes the porous AlPO4-17 structure, which drives the amorphization process. On the basis of the decrease in intensity of the XRD lines and broadening of the IR modes, the material was found to begin to amorphize near 1 GPa. XRD, mid- and far-IR analysis evidenced pressure-induced framework softening and complete irreversible amorphization near 2.5 GPa corresponding to the collapse of the pores. The bulk modulus and its first pressure derivative (B0 = 31.2(5) GPa and B′0 = −10.1(3)) at ambient temperature were determined by fitting a third order Birch–Murnaghan equation of state (EOS) to the pressure–volume data. The material is extremely compressible and exhibits an elastic instability. Anomalous (negative) values of B′0 are very rare and have been observed previously for cyanides and metal–organic frameworks. Such an instability appears to be characteristic of materials, which exhibit strong NTE behavior and indicates a link between NTE and anomalous compressibility behavior. Mid-IR, far-IR, nuclear magnetic resonance, and pair distribution function analysis of the new amorphous form allow an amorphization mechanism to be proposed corresponding to a collapse of the structure around its pores retaining the columns built up of cancrinite cages and hexagonal prisms, based on alternating AlO4 and PO4 tetrahedra. An increase in coordination number of 10% of the Al atoms was observed. The pressure-induced amorphization in the strong NTE material AlPO4-17 opens the door to the development of new technological applications as crystal–amorphous nanocomposites with zero or specifically selected thermal expansion coefficients.

The temperature-dependent optical response of excitons in semiconductors is controlled by the exciton-phonon interaction. When the exciton-lattice coupling is weak, the excitonic line has a Lorentzian profile resulting from motional narrowing, with a width increasing linearly with the lattice temperature T . In contrast, when the exciton-lattice coupling is strong, the line shape is Gaussian with a width increasing sublinearly with the lattice temperature, proportional to sqrt(T) . While the former case is commonly reported in the literature, here the latter is reported for hexagonal boron nitride. Thus the theoretical predictions of Toyozawa [Prog. Theor. Phys. 20, 53 (1958)] are supported by demonstrating that the exciton-phonon interaction is in the strong-coupling regime in this van der Waals crystal.

The recycling process toward the elimination of varistor wastes into new electro-active silicon composites has been investigated. We studied the dependence of the E-J characteristics on the aggregate content in the polymer matrix. Formulations with 40 vol.% metal oxide varistor aggregates in the 100-200m range exhibit reliable nonlinear behavior with a switching voltage of 280 +/- 30V/mm. The breakdown voltage of the composite decreases as both filler's diameter and filler's volume fraction increases in the 550-220V/mm and 440-280V/mm range, respectively. This paves the way for the valorization of varistors based zinc oxide (ZnO) ceramics.
