The band structure of three-layer symmetric InAs/GaSb/InAs quantum wells confined between AlSb barriers is analyzed theoretically. It is shown that, depending on the thicknesses of the InAs and GaSb layers, a normal band structure, a gapless state with a Dirac cone at the center of the Brillouin zone, or inverted band structure (two-dimensional topological insulator) can be realized in this system. Measurements of the cyclotron resonance in structures with gapless band spectra carried out for different electron concentrations confirm the existence of massless Dirac fermions in InAs/GaSb/InAs quantum wells.

Due to their specific physical properties, HgCdTe-based heterostructures are expected to play an important role in terahertz photonic systems. Here, focusing on gated devices presenting inverted band ordering, we evidence an enhancement of the terahertz photoconductive response close to the charge neutrality point and at the magnetic field driven topological phase transition. We also show the ability of these heterostructures to be used as terahertz imagers. Regarding terahertz emitters, we present results on stimulated emission of HgCdTe heterostructures in their conventional semiconductor state above 30 THz, discussing the physical mechanisms involved and promising routes towards the 5–15 THz frequency domain.

Nuclear spin relaxation is studied in n-GaAs thick layers and microcavity samples with different electron densities.We reveal that both in metallic samples where electrons are free and mobile, and in insulating samples where electrons are localized, nuclear spin relaxation is strongly enhanced at low magnetic fields. The origin of this effect could reside in the quadrupole interaction between nuclei and fluctuating electron charges, that has been proposed to govern nuclear spin dynamics at low magnetic fields in the insulating samples. The characteristic values of these magnetic fields are given by dipole-dipole interaction between nuclei in bulk samples, and are greatly enhanced in microcavities, presumably due to additional strain, inherent to microstructures and nanostructures.

Casein micelles (CMs) are colloidal phospho-protein-mineral complexes naturally present in milk. This study used atomic force microscopy (AFM) in a liquid environment to evaluate the topography and nanomechanics of single native CMs immobilized by a novel capture method. The proposed immobilization method involves weak interactions with theantiphospho-Ser/Thr/Tyr monoclonal antibody covalently bound to a carboxylic acid self-assembled monolayer (SAM)on a gold surface. This capture strategy was compared to the commonly used covalent immobilization method of CMs viacarbodiimide chemistry. With this conventional method, CMs remained mainly mobile during AFM measurements in liquid,disturbing the evaluation of their average size and elastic properties. Conversely, when captured by the specific antibody, they were successfully immobilized and their integrity was preserved during the AFM measurement. The characterization of both CM topography and elastic properties was carried out in a liquid ionic environment at native pH 6.6. The CMs’ capture efficiency via antibody was concurrently proved by surface plasmon resonance. The calculation of casein micelles’ width, height, and contact angle was carried out from the recorded 2D AFM images. CMs were characterized by a mean width of 148 ± 8 nm and a mean height of 42 ± 1 nm. Weak forces were applied to single captured CMs. The obtained force versus indentation curves were fitted using the Hertz model in order to evaluate their elastic properties. The elasticity distribution of native CMs exhibited a unimodal trend with a peak centered at 269 ± 14 kPa.

A general theory of photon-mediated energy and momentum transfer in N-body planar systems out of thermal equilibrium is introduced. It is based on the combination of the scattering theory and the fluctuational electrodynamics approach in many-body systems. By making a Landauer-like formulation of the heat transfer problem, explicit formulas for the energy transmission coefficients between two distinct slabs as well as the self-coupling coefficients are derived and expressed in terms of the reflection and transmission coefficients of the single bodies. We also show how to calculate local equilibrium temperatures in such systems. An analogous formulation is introduced to quantify momentum transfer coefficients describing Casimir-Lifshitz forces out of thermal equilibrium. Forces at thermal equilibrium are readily obtained as a particular case. As an illustration of this general theoretical framework, we show on three-body systems how the presence of a fourth slab can impact equilibrium temperatures in heat-transfer problems and equilibrium positions resulting from the forces acting on the system.

In situ and ex situ Raman measurements were used to study the dynamics of the populations of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) during their catalytic growth by chemical vapor deposition. Our study reveals that the nanotube diameter distribution strongly evolves during SWCNT growth but in dissimilar ways depending on the growth conditions. We notably show that high selectivity can be obtained using short or moderate growth times. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy observations support that Ostwald ripening is the key process driving these seemingly contradictory results by regulating the size distribution and lifetime of the active catalyst particles. Ostwald ripening appears as the main termination mechanism for the smallest diameter tubes, whereas carbon poisoning dominates for the largest ones. By unveiling the key concept of dynamic competition between nanotube growth and catalyst ripening, we show that time can be used as an active parameter to control the growth selectivity of carbon nanotubes and other 1D systems.
