Quantum computers, quantum engineering and quantumness

Sommaire:

Over the last 15 years significant progress has been made both in theoretical and experimental research in the area of artificial macroscopic quantum structures. The investigation of their possible technological applications, not limited to quantum computing and quantum communications, thus becomes meaningful and promising, and the new field of quantum engineering is emerging.
The major challenge on our way towards "quantum technologies v.2.0" is in the long-known fundamental impossibility of simulating large enough quantum systems by classical means, which, unfortunately, manifests itself already at the level of systems containing as few as several hundreds of qubits. I will review the current status of the field and discuss some possible ways of meeting this challenge.
