Résumé: Using complex plane analysis we show that left-handed slab may support either leaky slab waves, which are backward because of negative refraction, or leaky surface waves, which are backward or forward depending on the propagation direction of the surface wave itself. Moreover, there is a general connection between the reflection coefficient of the left-handed slab and the one of the corresponding right-handed slab (with opposite permittivity and permeability) so that leaky slab modes are excited for the same angle of incidence of the impinging beam for both structures. Many negative giant lateral shifts can be explained by the excitation of these leaky modes.

Résumé: The direction of propagation followed by a monochromatic beam in a periodic structure is generally deduced from the isofrequency diagram, which is related to the group velocity. However, the group velocity is the derivative of ω with respect to the wavenumber, while the behavior of the beam should depend on ω only. In the subwavelength regime, a method for choosing the relevant branch of the isofrequency diagram and relying on the behavior of the system at ω only is described.

Résumé: Wave propagation and diffraction in a membrane photonic crystal with finite height were studied in the case where the free-space wavelength is large with respect to the period of the structure. The photonic crystals studied are made of materials with anisotropic permittivity and permeability. Use of the concept of two-scale convergence allowed the photonic crystals to be homogenized.
