Les performances exceptionnelles des composites naturels comme la nacre ou le bois émergent de l’arrangement précis d’éléments souples et rigides à l’échelle nanométrique. L’assemblage couche-par-couche permet la fabrication de films avec un contrôle nanométrique de l’organisation et de la composition. Ce travail décrit l’assemblage et les propriétés de nouveaux nano-composites contenant des nano-renforts 1-D (fibrilles de cellulose) et 2-D (plaquettes d’argile). Nous avons combiné les argiles avec une matrice extrêmement souple de poly(diméthylsiloxane) dans une architecture lamellaire imitant celle de la nacre. Nous avons étudié des composites à base de fibrilles de cellulose aléatoirement orientées dans le plan, puis alignées dans une direction pour mieux imiter les parois cellulaires du bois. Les propriétés mécaniques de ces composites bio-inspirés égalent ou surpassent celles de leurs homologues naturels, tout en étant transparents et dans certains cas auto-réparants.

The Continuous Droplet Interface Crossing Encapsulation (cDICE) is an easy and robust method for producing, at high yield, monodisperse lipid vesicles with a controlled content as well as capsules with a designed shell. It consists in forcing a droplet through an interface between two imiscible fluids, using an external force such as centrifugation. At high inertia, the droplet entrain fluid that will constitute the shell of the capsule. At low inertia, the presence of amphiphile and the deformable interface interactions lead to monolayers zipping and formation of an amphiphile bilayer around the droplet. We will discuss the physical mechanisms involved in the production of both cDICE vesicles (low droplets inertia) and capsules (at high inertia), and the potential applications of this method. This method founds indeed many applications in biomimetics as it allows to encapsulate various biological solutions (biopolymers, hemoglobin, colloids, polymeric gels, cells. . . ) in membranes that can be composite and/or assymetric, or polymeric, and in the field of microencapsulation.

Le cycle de conférence TICE a pour objectif de faire tous les deux ans le point sur les résultats de recherches, les nouvelles applications, les derniers usages, et les retours d’expériences dans le domaine de l’éducation supérieure numérique. Le colloque TICE 2014 est organisé par l’IUT de Beziers, une composante de l’Université Montpellier 2. Cette neuvième édition du colloque TICE sera l’occasion de rassembler à Béziers, du 18 au 20 Novembre 2014, la communauté scientifique et industrielle des TICE autour du thème « Nouvelles pédagogies et sciences et technologies du numérique ».

When a straight rod is bent and suddenly released on one end, a burst of dispersive flexural waves propagates down the material as predicted by linear beam theories. However, we show that for ribbons with a longitudinal natural radius of curvature a0, geometrical constraints lead to strain localization which controls the dynamics. This localized region of deformation selects a specific curling deformation front which travels down the ribbon when initially flattened and released. Performing experiments on different ribbons, in air and in water, we show that initially, on length scales on the order of a0, the curling front moves as a power law of time with an exponent ranging from 0.5 to 2 for increasing values of the ribbons' width. At longer time scales, the material wraps itself at a constant speed Vr into a roll of radius R ≠ a0. The relationship between Vr and R is calculated by a balance between kinetic, elastic and gravitational energy and both internal and external powers dissipated. When gravity and drag are negligible, we observe that a0/R reaches a limiting value of 0.48 that we predict by solving the Elastica on the curled ribbon considering the centrifugal forces due to rotation. The solution we propose represents a solitary traveling curvature wave which is reminiscent to propagating instabilities in mechanics.
