Directed and true self-assembly mechanisms in nematic liquid crystal colloids rely on specific interactions between microparticles and the topological defects of the matrix. Most ordered structures formed in thin nematic cells are thus based on elastic multipoles consisting of a particle and nearby defects. Here, we report, for the first time to our knowledge, the existence of giant elastic dipoles arising from particles dispersed in free nematic liquid crystal films. We discuss the role of capillarity and film thickness on the dimensions of the dipoles and explain their main features with a simple 2D model. Coupling of capillarity with nematic elasticity could offer ways to tune finely the spatial organization of complex colloidal systems.

Tubular lipid membranes (TLMs) are formed by an external pulling force from artificial or biological bilayer vesicles and can be subsequently stabilized by incorporating proteins or amphiphilic polymers into the lipid bilayer. The arising spontaneous curvature of the lipid sheet allows switching off the pulling force without TLM destabilization. However, here we show that during this process two different thermal fluctuation modes drastically increase their amplitudes making fluctuations of the TLM much greater than its radius. Due to the system’s proximity to the critical fluctuation point, a weak axial compressive force is sufficient to destabilize the TLM. Its absolute value is shown to be much smaller than that of the pulling force required for the initial lipid nanotube formation. Induced complex instability was studied in the frame of Landau phase transition theory. The process involves two consecutive second-order phase transitions and leads to the tube deformation combining annular corrugation with completely unconventional chiral buckling.

Subcritical crack growth and crack closure are analysed using the double-cleavage-drilled-compression method, in two calcium phosphate based glasses. The measurements of the crack velocity as a function of temperature, from ambient to 250°C, are reported for two different relative humidity levels. Studied glasses present unusual trends characterized by a non gradual shift of V-KI curves versus temperature. Moreover, when the load is released and crack closes, expulsion of a “liquid-like” phase is observed forming droplets along the crack path. These droplets are only formed at certain temperatures, but both under high and low water humidity. They evolve toward residues when temperature is decreased.

We present extensive experimental and theoretical investigations on the structure, phase behavior, dynamics and rheology of model soft–hard colloidal mixtures realized with large, multiarm star polymers as the soft component and smaller, compact stars as the hard one. The number and length of the arms in star polymers control their softness, whereas the size ratio, the overall density and the composition are additional parameters varied for the mixtures. A coarse-grained theoretical strategy is employed to predict the structure of the systems as well as their ergodicity properties on the basis of mode coupling theory, for comparison with rheological measurements on the samples. We discovered that dynamically arrested star–polymer solutions recover their ergodicity upon addition of colloidal additives. At the same time the system displays demixing instability, and the binodal of the latter meets the glass line in a way that leads, upon addition of a sufficient amount of colloidal particles, to an arrested phase separation and reentrant solidification. We present evidence for a subsequent solid-to-solid transition well within the region of arrested phase separation, attributed to a hard-sphere-mixture type of glass, due to osmotic shrinkage of the stars at high colloidal particle concentrations. We systematically investigated the interplay of star functionality and size ratio with glass melting and demixing, and rationalized our findings by the depletion of the big stars due to the smaller colloids. This new depletion potential in which, contrary to the classic colloid–polymer case, the hard component depletes the soft one, has unique and novel characteristics and allows the calculation of phase diagrams for such mixtures. This work covers a broad range of soft–hard colloidal mixture compositions in which the soft component exceeds the hard one in size and provides general guidelines for controlling the properties of such complex mixtures.

We propose a configuration of a single three-level quantum emitter embedded in a non-equilibrium steady electromagnetic environment, able to stabilize and control the local temperatures of a target system it interacts with, consisting of a collection of coupled two-level systems.The temperatures are induced by dissipative processes only, without the need of further external couplings for each qubit. Moreover, by acting on a set of easily tunable geometric parameters, we demonstrate the possibility to manipulate and tune each qubit temperature independently over a remarkably broad range of values. These findings address one standard problem in quantum-scale thermodynamics, providing a way to induce a desired distribution of temperature among interacting qubits and to protect it from external noise sources.

We calculate the trajectory of a moving object on earth and the trajectory of the earth around the sun in a fourdimensional space (x, y, z, t). We see that the trajectory has a mass: this is what is called dark matter which mass depends on the mass of the moving object. Indeed the deformation of space, the track, deviates light as we are at the hypersurface of the universe, and that is the method of measurement of the 'mass' of the universe.

We present a comprehensive analysis of effective temperatures based on fluctuation-dissipation relations in a model of an active fluid composed of self-propelled hard disks. We first investigate the relevance of effective temperatures in the dilute and moderately dense fluids. We find that a unique effective temperature does not in general characterize the non-equilibrium dynamics of the active fluid over this broad range of densities, because fluctuation-dissipation relations yield a lengthscale-dependent effective temperature. By contrast, we find that the approach to a non-equilibrium glass transition at very large densities is accompanied by the emergence of a unique effective temperature shared by fluctuations at all lengthscales. This suggests that an effective thermal dynamics generically emerges at long times in very dense suspensions of active particles due to the collective freezing occurring at non-equilibrium glass transitions.
