Influence of boundary conditions on instabilities and shape phase transitions in tubular lipid membranes

Physical models of unconventional capsid structures and assembly thermodynamics

Contrary to the usual “rigid supermolecular assembly” paradigm of chromatin structure, we propose to analyze its eventual ordered state in terms of symmetry properties of individual nucleosomes that give rise to mesophase order parameters, like in many other soft-matter systems. Basing our approach on the Landau–de Gennes phenomenology, we describe the mesoscale order in chromatin by antipolar and anticlinic correlations of chiral individual nucleosomes. This approach leads to a unifying physical picture of a whole series of soft locally ordered states with different apparent structures, including the recently observed heteromorphic chromatin, stemming from the antipolar arrangement of nucleosomes complemented by their chiral twisting. Properties of these states under an external force field can reconcile apparently contradictory results of single-molecule experiments.

Active colloids are an emerging and promising class of colloidal particles, which are designed to perform autonomous motion by transforming chemical or other form of energies into work and propulsion.Here, we have investigated the active motion of self-propelled colloids confined at the air-water interface. The two dimensional motion of micron-sized Silica-Platinum Janus colloids has been experimentally measured by particle tracking video-microscopy under increasing concentration of the catalytic fuel, i.e. H2O2. Comparing to the motion in bulk, a dramatic enhancement of both the persistence length of trajectories and the speed has been observed. The interplay of colloid self-propulsion, due to an asymmetric catalytic reaction occurring on the colloid, and interfacial frictions controls the enhancement of the directional movement. The slowing down of the rotational diffusion at the interface, also measured experimentally, plays a pivotal role in the control and enhancement of active motion.

We combine computer simulations and analytical theory to investigate the glassy dynamics in dense assemblies of athermal particles evolving under the sole influence of self-propulsion. The simulations reveal that when the persistence time of the self-propelled particles is increased, the local structure becomes more pronounced whereas the long-time dynamics first accelerates and then slows down. These seemingly contradictory evolutions are explained by constructing a nonequilibrium mode-coupling-like theory for interacting self-propelled particles. To predict the collective dynamics the theory needs the steady state structure factor and the steady state correlations of the local velocities. It yields nontrivial predictions for the glassy dynamics of self-propelled particles in qualitative agreement with the simulations.

We study theoretically and experimentally the plasmonic THz detection by the asymmetric dual-grating-gate HEMT at room temperature without source-to-drain bias. We derive the analytical expressions of photocurrents due to the plasmonic drag and ratchet effects, and we discuss about their frequency dependences. We also compare the theory to the experimentally obtained frequency dependence. It is demonstrated that they agree qualitatively well.
