Liquid sheets that freely expand in air can be produced by the impact of a small drop of liquid on a cylindrical target of size comparable to that of the drop. In this talk I will illustrate with two examples how the imaging with a fast camera of the dynamics of the sheets thus formed can shed light on fundamental and industrial issues. On the one hand, we quantify the interplay between elasticity and viscosity and the effects of a strong and fast deformation on viscoelastic droplets. On the other hand, we rationalize the role of dilute emulsions in the destabilization mechanism of liquid sheets and its consequence for anti-drift phenomena in agricultural sprays.

The structure of polymer nanocomposites has important consequences on final properties, like for instance mechanical reinforcement. While the structure of the hard filler phase is usually characterized by electron microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering, the chain conformation can only be measured by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS).

Nanoparticles (NPs) can now be synthesized with a wide array of controlled sizes, shapes, and properties. However, turning them into nanomaterials often requires packing them into ordered assemblies to manifest specific electronic or optical properties for applications in nanoelectronics, optics, and metamaterials. Colloidal self-assembly (1) of NPs is relatively simple but is often restricted to high-symmetry crystals by the lack of specific directional bonds, especially for dilute NP solutions. To obtain lower symmetries that confer useful optical or electronic properties, long-range directional interactions must be imparted. On page 69 of this issue, Mundoor et al. (2) make clever use of an anisotropic host fluid, a liquid crystal, to promote the formation of a low-symmetry crystal in a dilute dispersion of nanorods.

Advances in growth technology of oxide materials allow single atomic layer control of heterostructures. In particular delta doping, a key materials’ engineering tool in today’s semiconductor technology, is now also available for oxides. Here we show that a fully electric-field-tunable spin-polarized and superconducting quasi-2D electron system (q2DES) can be artificially created by inserting a few unit cells of delta doping EuTiO3 at the interface between LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 oxides1, 2. Spin polarization emerges below the ferromagnetic transition temperature of the EuTiO3 layer (TFM = 6–8 K) and is due to the exchange interaction between the magnetic moments of Eu-4f and of Ti-3d electrons. Moreover, in a large region of the phase diagram, superconductivity sets in from a ferromagnetic normal state. The occurrence of magnetic interactions, superconductivity and spin–orbit coupling in the same q2DES makes the LaAlO3/EuTiO3/SrTiO3 system an intriguing platform for the emergence of novel quantum phases in low-dimensional materials.

One possible framework to interpret the irreversibility transition observed in periodically driven colloidal suspensions is that of a non-equilibrium phase transition towards an absorbing reversible state at low amplitude of the driving force. We consider a simple numerical model for driven suspensions which allows us to characterize in great detail a large body of physical observables that can be experimentally determined to assess the existence and universality class of such a non-equilibrium phase transition. Characterizing the behaviour of static and dynamic correlation functions both in real and Fourier space we determine in particular several critical exponents for our model, which take values that are in good agreement with the universality class of direct ed percolation. We also provide a detailed analysis of single-particle and collective dynamics of the system near the phase transition, which appear intermittent and spatially correlated over diverging timescales and lengthscales, and provide clear signatures of the underlying criticality.
