Periodic mesoporous ionosilica nanoparticles with ammonium wallswere synthesized exclusively from a trisilylated ammonium precursor. The nanoparticlesdisplay a uniform particle size, together with a high specific surface area and anordered hexagonal pore architecture. Completely biocompatible in vitro and in vivo,the nanoparticles are efficiently endocytosed by RAW 264.7 macrophages and used ascarrier vehicles for anionic drugs. Diclofenac-loaded ionosilica nanoparticles are veryefficient in inhibiting lipopolysaccharides-induced inflammation.

We show that the energy-transport efficiency in a chain of two-level emitters can be drastically enhanced by the presence of a photonic topological insulator (PTI). This is obtained by exploiting the peculiar properties of its nonreciprocal surface plasmon polariton (SPP), which is unidirectional, and immune to backscattering, and propagates in the bulk band gap. This amplification of transport efficiency can be as much as 2 orders of magnitude with respect to reciprocal SPPs. Moreover, we demonstrate that despite the presence of considerable imperfections at the interface of the PTI, the efficiency of the SPP-assisted energy transport is almost unaffected by discontinuities. We also show that the SPP properties allow energy transport over considerably much larger distances than in the reciprocal case, and we point out aparticularly simple way to tune the transport. Finally, we analyze the specific case of a two-emitter chain and unveil the origin of the efficiency amplification. The efficiency amplification and the practical advantages highlighted in this work might be particularly useful in the development of new devices intended to manage energy at the atomic scale.

Polarized Raman scattering is performed in a series of sodo-silicate glasses. The Si–O–Si inter-tetrahedral angle and its distribution are extracted using a model developed previously for densified silica, and the result are compared to ab initio atomistic calculations. The two techniques reveal a reduction of the most probable angle of about 0.30°/mol% of Na2O, but the shape of the angular distributions are different. The results suggest that Raman scattering enhances a specific angular distribution of Si–O–Si bridges, likely those close to sodium atoms, highlighting local angular heterogeneities.

The recently proposed renormalization group improved optimized perturbation theory is employed to evaluate the pressure of the two dimensional non linear sigma model at finite temperatures. We explicitly show how this powerful resummation method can turn the lowest (one loop) perturbative contribution to the pressure, which is not RG invariant, into a non perturbative quantity exhibiting scale invariance.

The clockwork mechanism is a novel method for generating a large separation between the dynamical scale and interaction scale of a theory. We demonstrate how the mechanism can arise from a sequence of strongly-coupled sectors. This framework avoids elementary scalar fields as well as ad hoc continuous global symmetries, both of which are subject to serious stability issues. The clockwork factor, q, is determined by the consistency of the strong dynamics. The preserved global U(1) of the clockwork appears as an accidental symmetry, resulting from discrete or U(1) gauge symmetries, and it is spontaneously broken by the chiral condensates. We apply such a dynamical clockwork to construct models with an effectively invisible QCD axion from TeV-scale strong dynamics. The axion couplings are determined by the localisation of the Standard Model interactions along the clockwork sequence. The TeV spectrum includes either coloured hadrons or vector-like quarks. Dark matter can be accounted for by the axion or the lightest neutral baryons, which are accidentally stable.

Central nervous system (CNS) injury has been observed to lead to microglia activation and monocytes infiltration at the lesion site. Ex vivo diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (diffusion MRI or DWI) allows detailed examination of CNS tissues, and recent advances in clearing procedures allow detailed imaging of fluorescent-labeled cells at high resolution. No study has yet combined ex vivo diffusion MRI and clearing procedures to establish a possible link between microglia/monocytes response and diffusion coefficient in the context of spinal cord injury (SCI). We carried out ex vivo MRI of the spinal cord at different time-points after spinal cord transection followed by tetrahydrofuran based clearing and examined the density and morphology of microglia/monocytes using two-photon microscopy. Quantitative analysis revealed an early marked increase in microglial/monocytes density that is associated with an increase in the extension of the lesion measured using diffusion MRI. Morphological examination of microglia/monocytes somata at the lesion site revealed a significant increase in their surface area and volume as early as 72 hours post-injury. Time-course analysis showed differential microglial/monocytes response rostral and caudal to the lesion site. Microglia/monocytes showed a decrease in reactivity over time caudal to the lesion site, but an increase was observed rostrally. Direct comparison of microglia/monocytes morphology, obtained through multiphoton, and the longitudinal apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), measured with diffusion MRI, highlighted that axonal integrity does not correlate with the density of microglia/monocytes or their somata morphology. We emphasize that differential microglial/monocytes reactivity rostral and caudal to the lesion site may thus coincide, at least partially, with reported temporal differences in debris clearance. Our study demonstrates that the combination of ex vivo diffusion MRI and two-photon microscopy may be used to follow structural tissue alteration. Lesion extension coincides with microglia/monocytes density; however, a direct relationship between ADC and microglia/monocytes density and morphology was not observed. We highlighted a differential rostro-caudal microglia/monocytes reactivity that may correspond to a temporal difference in debris clearance and axonal integrity. Thus, potential therapeutic strategies targeting microglia/monocytes after SCI may need to be adjusted not only with the time after injury but also relative to the location to the lesion site.

We demonstrate theoretically that the presence of holes, either resident or photocreated, in diluted magnetic quantum wells accelerates the spin relaxation of electrons via a mechanismwhich has been previously overlooked. This effect is due to the spin correlations, which establish between magnetic ions coupled via hole-mediated Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida interactions in the paramagnetic phase. As a consequence, the electron spin relaxation becomes temperature and hole density dependent, in contrast to existing theories. Our theory qualitatively reproduces the increase of the electron spin relaxation rate with pump power observed in n-doped CdMnTe magnetic quantum wells [Ben Cheikh et al., Phys. Rev. B 88, 201306 (2013)]. It also predicts a decrease of the spin relaxation rate with temperature, as observed, although not in the same temperature range.
