The dark matter enigma

(Physique Théorique)

Sommaire:

About 85% of the matter in the universe is not made of the kind of matter we know, while gravitating the same (assuming General Relativity is correct). I will explain how this "dark matter problem" has emerged in astrophysics and cosmology, and how independent theoretical developments in particle physics beyond the Standard Model have provided potential solutions by predicting the existence of new stable elementary particles. I will review the properties of these exotic particles, in particular the class of models called WIMPs, and explain how such scenarios could be observationally confirmed or excluded in the near future.
