Structure-dynamics relationship in glass-forming liquids

(Physique Statistique)

Sommaire:

The dynamics of glass-forming liquids is heterogeneous and display spatial correlations that grow on approaching the glass transition temperature. Whether such dynamic heterogeneities arise from heterogeneities of the local structure or more complex forms of amorphous static order is a highly debated question in the glass community. I will report simulation results that show that the correlation between local structure and dynamic heterogeneity is strongly system dependent. I will argue that the strength of this correlation depends on how closely a given liquid conforms to "mean-field" behaviour.
