Research Internship (level : Master 2)
Understanding carbon nanotube growth selectivity using advanced in situ optical imaging of individual nanotubes

Research project
The growth of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with controlled electronic properties (i.e. either metallic M or semiconducting SC) is a key challenge for the development of a new generation of transistors with lower energy consumption. The objective of this master project is to study how gaseous etchants (like H2O) influence the growth kinetics of SWCNTs and thus the selectivity towards specific types of SWCNTs.

To do so, the master intern will first learn how to grow individual CNTs aligned on a substrate, how to observe them growing using an advanced system of optical imaging and how to characterize their type by Raman spectroscopy. All experimental facilities are fully operational and available for the project. The intern will work in close collaboration with theorists and microscopists from other laboratories (Cinam, CEA Grenoble) as part of a research consortium funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR DARWIN).

Candidates must be Master 2 students in physics, physical chemistry or materials science, motivated by research at the frontiers of physics and chemistry, and by the pursuit of a PhD thesis. Candidates with high motivation for academic research, experimental rigor, taste for experimental work, and communication skills in English are strongly encouraged to apply.
