Crack tips in silica glass in moist atmosphere are filled with an equilibrium liquid condensation of a few hundred nanometers length. Not only does this local environment affect the chemistry of slow crack propagation by stress corrosion, but it also has an important mechanical effect due to its highly negative Laplace pressure. The present article presents an original technique for measuring the physical properties of the liquid condensation in terms of the Laplace pressure and critical condensation distance. This is achieved by combining in situ atomic force microscopy measurements of the condensate length and optical determination of the crack closure threshold in a double cleavage drilled compression specimen.

En microscopie à force atomique (AFM), la modulation d’amplitude (AM AFM) est très largement utilisée dans les AFM commerciaux ou non, généralement en mode de contact intermittent avec la surface (autrement appelé « tapping » ©). Ce mode de fonctionnement résonnant a été notamment développé pour imager des surfaces (polymère mous, biomatériaux) ou objets (nanoparticules, nanotubes, bactéries), qui sont facilement endommagés ou déplacés en mode contact, à cause de l’application constante d’une force répulsive pointe-surface. En AM AFM, le système pointe levier est excité de manière sinusoïdale à une fréquence fixe proche de sa fréquence de résonnance. L’image topographique de la surface est obtenue en maintenant constante l’amplitude de la réponse vibrationnelle du levier grâce à une boucle de rétroaction jouant sur la position verticale du levier. La pointe ne vient alors « frapper » la surface qu’une fois par oscillation et ne raye ainsi pas la surface scannée, ce qui permet de dégrader moins rapidement, et la pointe, et l’échantillon. Un autre aspect intéressant de ce mode de fonctionnement est qu’en parcourant le champ complet du potentiel d’interaction pointe-surface au cours des oscillations, le déplacement de la pointe permet d’obtenir des informations complémentaires sur ces interactions. L’acquisition du signal de déphasage entre l’excitation et la réponse sinusoïdale du levier permet ainsi potentiellement d’accéder à des caractérisations locales de propriétés de surface (mécaniques, de mouillage, d’adhésion, …). Ce domaine d’utilisation (souvent appelé imagerie de phase) de l’AM-AFM est encore en plein développement, avec des applications de plus en plus quantitatives. Néanmoins, l’analyse de la réponse du système oscillant pointe-levier dans le champ d’interaction avec la surface est complexe, fortement non linéaire et parfois assez contre-intuitif… Dans ce cours, je présenterai le modèle analytique de l’oscillateur harmonique forcé amorti en présence d’un potentiel d’interaction attractif/répulsif avec une surface qui est le modèle le plus simple que l’on puisse utiliser pour décrire le fonctionnement AM AFM. J’essayerai d’insister sur certains éléments à considérer soigneusement pour pouvoir utiliser correctement ce modèle et espérer accéder à des caractérisations quantitatives des propriétés de surfaces. Je donnerais ensuite quelques exemples d’applications quantitatives de l’image de phase. Nous verrons également comment se manifestent certains aspects non linéaires de la réponse du levier, notamment le phénomène de bi-stabilité. Tout au long du cours, nous nous intéresserons aussi bien à la réponse du levier au cours de la réalisation d’une image que lors de l’acquisition d’une courbe approche-retrait.

By investigating more than six decades of length scales (from nm to mm), we have studied how linear elastic well-known solutions hold water at the close neighbourhood of the tip of a crack propagating in oxide glass under stress-corrosion regime. The existence of dissipative mechanisms at small scale was especially targeted. Subcritical crack propagation was performed by a loading cell on Double Cleavage Drilled Compression samples under controlled atmosphere. Post-mortem and in-situ observations were performed by optical techniques and atomic force microscopy (AFM). A 2D/3D analysis of this sample was realized according to linear elastic fracture mechanics in order to discuss the experimental results and to ensure the mechanical test control at all scales. The mechanical effect of capillary condensation observed by AFM at the crack tip was modelled according to a cohesive zone model. This allowed notably to evaluate the negative Laplace pressure in the liquid and to explain the crack closure mechanism in glass. A digital image correlation technique was used on series of consecutive AFM in-situ images. We showed that the elastic solution for the surface displacement field is valid up to a distance of 10 nm from the crack tip. The height correlation functions along the AFM images of fracture surfaces were also analyzed. We showed that the cut-off length, found close to few tens of nanometres and previously interpreted as the process zone size, is most probably due to the finite size of the AFM scanning probe and in agreement with the DIC, no process zone larger than 20 nm is observable.

The roughness of fracture surfaces exhibits self-affinity for a wide variety of materials and loading conditions. The universality and the range of scales over which this regime extends are still debated. The topography of these surfaces is however often investigated with a finite contact probe. In this case, we show that the correlation function of the roughness can only be measured down to a length scale Delta x(c) which depends on the probe size R, the Hurst exponent zeta of the surface and its topothesy l, and exhibits spurious behavior at smaller scales. First, we derive the dependence of Delta x(c) on these parameters from a simple scaling argument. Then, we verify this dependence numerically. Finally, we establish the relevance of this analysis from AFM measurements on an experimental glass fracture surface and provide a metrological procedure for roughness measurements.

The opening profile of the cracks produced in the Double Cleavage Drilled Compression (DCDC) specimens for brittle materials is investigated. The study is achieved by combining Finite element simulations of a DCDC linear elastic medium with experimental measurements by crack opening interferometry on pure silica glass samples. We show that the shape of the crack can be described by a simple expression as a function of the geometrical parameters of the sample and the external loading conditions. This result can be used to measure accurately in real time relevant quantities during DCDC experiments, such as the crack length or the stress intensity factor applied to the specimen.
