Plastic pollution is pervasive in world oceans and has gained large attention by the media, the public and the governments. The urgency of this issue was recognized by nearly 200 countries that signed in December 2017 in Nairobi the U.N. draft Resolution on Marine Litter and Microplastics. It encourages Member States and stakeholders to take action but despite acknowledging the problem, the resolution does not contain any legally binding agreement.Meanwhile plastic litter continues to accumulate in world oceans. It has been estimated that 8 million tons (Mt) of plastic waste reaches the ocean each year, and with no action that volume is projected to double by 2030, and double again by 2050. In order to tackle this issue, NGOs, startups, activists, public and private decision makers need correct information about the reality of plastic pollution in the sea, its impacts on marine ecosystems and human health. Among the large quantity of information available, it is difficult to differentiate exaggerated alarms from miracle solutions, while taking into account unknown but potential risks of plastic pollution. Scientific evidence shows a complex reality.In order to increase overall scientific literacy on plastic pollution, the associated risks and the possible solutions, thecamp, the new innovation campus located in Aix-en-Provence, France, has created the Plastic and Ocean Platform with the view of bringing together and promoting collaboration between scientists, NGOs and plastic experts.The goal of the Platform, supported by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, is to facilitate the exchange of information and provide a clear and comprehensible overview of the current scientific knowledge and understanding about plastic pollution and the way to fight it. This information will be shared widely to the media, the general public and the decision makers. As of today, more than 30 international research scientists and 20 NGOs have contributed to the Plastic and Ocean Platform. We are now expanding this network.The first production of the Plastic and Ocean Platform is a state of the art on what is known and what is not known about plastic pollution. Following a collective work with the NGOs, the scientists have produced a scientific summary that gives synthetic answers to the most common questions the public is asking on the reality of plastic pollution and its consequences.

Malgré un rôle important en physique, biologie et dans les processus industriels tels l’agroalimentaire et la dépollution de l’eau, la dynamique d'une particule colloïdale à proximité d'une interface fluide et ses interactions avec l’interface sont des phénomènes physiques encore débattus.Dans cette thèse, nous explorons la dynamique et l'interaction de particules colloïdales individuelles à proximité d'une interface air-eau à l’équilibre thermique.Afin de mener cette étude sans perturber le système expérimental, nous avons conçu et construit un microscope interférentiel à double onde adapté à l'interface air-eau. Contrairement à d'autres techniques expérimentales, notre configuration permet la mesure précise de la distance absolue entre particule l'interface sans nécessiter d’étalonnage ou d’hypothèse sur l'emplacement de l'interface. Nous avons ainsi pu obtenir des trajectoires hautement résolues de particules en 3D proches de l'interface, permettant la mesure précise des diffusions proche de l’interface et des interactions particules-interface.Le système montre deux profils d’énergie potentielle différents. Deux distances d’équilibre particule-interface sont ainsi observées. La plus grande peut être expliquée par la compétition des interactions de Van der Waals et électrostatiques avec la pesanteur. La distance d’équilibre plus courte ne peut s’expliquer que par la présence d’une interaction attractive supplémentaire. Les origines possibles de cette interaction sont discutées.En utilisant une nouvelle méthode d'analyse des déplacements quadratiques moyens des particules dans un potentiel générique, nous avons pu accéder aux coefficients de friction visqueuse des particules en fonction de la distance à l'interface. De manière singulière, l’interface air-eau se comporte comme une paroi liquide pour le mouvement des particules parallèlement à l’interface et comme une paroi solide pour le mouvement des particules perpendiculaire à l’interface. Ce résultat expérimental peut être partiellement rationalisé en considérant des modèles récents basés sur l’incompressibilité de surface. Cependant, certaines différences entre les expériences et les théories demeurent. Les coefficients de friction visqueuse sont plus importants que les prédictions hydrodynamiques et dépendent de la charge électrique des particules, ce qui suggère un possible rôle des phénomènes électrocinétiques.Enfin, le piégeage des particules à l'interface air-eau et leur angle de contact ont été mesurés tout en modifiant la force ionique de la solution aqueuse et en faisant varier l‘état de surface des colloïdes.

Nous présentons dans ce manuscrit une technique d’imagerie basée sur l’holographie numérique. Elle permet d’imager en 3D et dans le temps la circulation sanguine chez une larve de poisson-zèbre. L’information 3D est acquise en une seule image de la caméra, ce qui permet de suivre le mouvement des globules rouges dans le système vasculaire. Nous évoquerons dans un premier temps les techniques de bio-imagerie et d’imagerie du flux sanguin traditionnelles, puis nous rappellerons les principes de l’holographie. Ensuite, nous décrirons la méthode d’imagerie que nous avons développée et les résultats expérimentaux obtenus. Nous compléterons, en présentant les différentes améliorations que nous avons apportées à la technique. Enfin, nous discuterons brièvement de l’application du compressed sensing à l’imagerie de la circulation sanguine dans le poisson-zèbre.

Aqueous interfaces are ubiquitous in Nature and play a fundamental role in environmental or biological processes or modern nanotechnologies. These interfaces are negatively charged, and despite several decades of research, the rationale behind this phenomenon is still under debate. Two main controversial schools of thought argue on this issue; the first relies on the adsorption of hydroxide anions on hydrophobic surfaces, whereas the second one supports a self-rearrangement of water molecules at the interface bearing hydronium ions. Here, we report on two series of independent experimental studies (nanoprecipitation and interfacial tension measurements) that demonstrate that in the pH 5–10 range the negative interfacial charge of the colloids mostly stems from bicarbonate ions, whereas at lower and higher pH, protons and hydroxide ions contribute, with bicarbonate ions, to the interfacial charging. This new interpretation complies with previous studies and opens new perspectives to this striking physical chemical issue.
