Nanotube-based patterns and films have exciting potential applications in electronics and opto-electronics. One of the key issues to optimize the electrical and optical properties of nanotube arrays is the control of their orientation. So far, orientation of nanotubes in thin films was achieved i) directly during CVD growth [1], ii) using liquid dispersions: by electrophoresis [Herman], in an hydrodynamic flow [Poulin,Li], in the field of an host liquid crystal [Ould-Moussa], by formation of a liquid crystal in concentrated suspensions [Zamora-nem], or iii) by stretching composites [Zamora-pol]. However, versatile and industry-compatible methods are still needed, and inkjet printing appears to be a good candidate. Recently, Denneulin et reported an heterogeneous orientation of SWNT in inket printed lines, with a preferential orientation parallel to the lines at the edges and perpendicular in the sub-surface [Denneulin]. On the other hand, Beyer et al reported an homogeneous alignment parallel to the lines for inkjet printed SWNT, and assigned it to the formation of a nematic phase for special printing rates [Beyer]. Here, we present a coupled Raman/SEM study of the alignment of SWNT during inkjet printing of aqueous suspensions as a function of temperature, nanotube concentration and printing conditions. We report a very good alignment of the nanotubes, especially at the edges of the printed patterns, and we discuss the contributions of hydrodynamics and thermodynamics to the orientation.

Carbon nanotubes are widely used as nanocharges in polymer matrix composites for improving mechanical or electrical properties. Nanocomposites can be prepared either in the solid or in the liquid state, and in the latter case by mixing nanotubes with either melted polymers or polymer solutions. Dispersion of SWNT with high yields, as well as high amounts of individual nanotubes, can be prepared in water with the help of surfactants. However, when using such suspensions as precursors for nanocomposites, the final materials will contain some surfactants which will influence their physical properties. On the other hand, dispersing nanotubes directly in polymer solutions without using surfactants leads to low yields and poor individualization.In this work, we propose an alternative and simple way to disperse single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) in aqueous solutions of two hydrosoluble polymers, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP). We measure the yield using visible-NIR absorption spectroscopy, and we probe both the chemical environment of the nanotubes and the effectiveness of individualization from coupled Raman/photoluminescence studies. First, we mix aqueous suspensions of SWNT stabilized with bile salts (BS) with solutions of PVA, and we evidence a direct exchange of BS molecules and PVA chains at the surface of SWNT. By contrast, no exchange is observed with PVP. Second, we show that a simple dialysis process leads to the preparation of aqueous suspensions of SWNT covered by PVA or PVP with high yields and an effective individualization of the nanotubes. This simple method opens a new way for preparing surfactant-free polymer matrice composites with high concentrations of individual SWNT.

La réalisation de condensats de Bose-Einstein et de gaz de Fermi dégénérés ont déclenché d'énormes progrès dans les méthodes théoriques ainsi que dans la mise en place de nouvelles techniques expérimentales. Parmi celles-ci, de fascinantes possibilités viennent de l'implémentation de réseaux optiques : potentiels périodiques pour atomes neutres créés à travers l'interférence de rayons laser. Un gaz dégénéré dans un réseau optique peut être forcé dans des pièges fortement anisotropes, jusqu'à réduire la dimensionnalité du système physique. Du point de vue fondamental, le comportement des ondes de matière en dimensions réduites éclaircit les propriétés intrinsèques des interactions entre particules. En outre, ces systèmes à dimensionnalité réduite peuvent être manipulés afin de créer des simulateurs quantiques de la matière condensée, comme par exemple des réseaux à deux dimensions, dans un environnement pur et contrôlable. Motivés par les passionnantes perspectives de ce domaine, on a consacré cette Thèse à l'étude théorique de deux systèmes dans lesquels une onde de matière se propage en dimensions réduites. L'interaction dipôle-dipôle, à longue portée et anisotrope, affecte fortement le comportement des gaz quantiques. Les progrès expérimentaux dans ce domaine florissant permettront bientôt de piéger dans des réseaux optiques un gaz dégénéré de dipôles. Dans la première partie de cette thèse, on considère l'apparition d'une seule résonance dipolaire dans l'interaction entre deux particules pour différents systèmes quasi-unidimensionnels. On propose une approche à deux canaux qui décrit cette résonance dans un piège harmonique fortement allongé “en forme de cigare”, qui représente l'approximation d'un site d'un réseau optique quasi-unidimensionnel. A` ce stade, on développe un nouveau modèle étendu de Bose-Hubbard atome-dimère, qui est valable pour des bosons dipolaires dans un réseau optique quasi-unidimensionnel. On étudie donc le diagramme de phase du modèle pour T =0 par la diagonalisation exacte de systèmes de petite taille, en soulignant les effets de la résonance dipolaire sur la physique à plusieurs corps dans le réseau. Dans la seconde partie de la thèse, on propose un modèle pour réaliser des simulateurs quantiques de cristaux bidimensionnels avec des atomes froids, basé sur le piégeage indépendant de deux espèces atomiques. La première constitue une onde de matière bidimensionnelle qui interagit exclusivement avec les atomes de la seconde espèce, piégés aux nœuds d'un réseau optique bidimensionnel. En introduisant une approche théorique générale, on examine les propriétés de transport de l'onde de matière. On propose des exemples d'application pour réseaux soit de Bravais (carré, triangulaire), soit de non-Bravais (graphène, kagomé), en étudiant soit des systèmes périodiques idéaux, soit des systèmes de taille expérimentale et désordonnés. Les caractéristiques d'un réseau atomique artificiel dépendent de l'intensité de l'interaction entre les deux espèces, qu'on montre être largement réglable grâce à des résonances à dimensionnalité mixte de type 0D-2D.

(EN)A micromagnetometry system for detecting the presence of very small quantities of magnetic particles comprises a first magnetic hybrid AMR/PHR multi-ring sensor (4) using a Wheastone bridge electrical configuration, a first current source (6), a first voltage measurement device (8), a set of at least one magnetic particles (12) deposited on the first magnetic sensor (4) and a processing unit (22) for detecting from a set of different measured differential voltages a magnetic flux shift representative of the presence of a least one deposited magnetic particle (12). The objective of this work is to study the effect of interlayer cations on the mechanism of adsorption-desorption of water in the case of a montmorillonite exchanged by alkali metals. This is done through thermodynamic measurements, i.e. isotherms of adsorption and desorption of water. The raw material is subjected to purification treatment by using the sedimentation followed by cationic exchange. IR and XRD analysis of the dry state confirm that the treatment used for obtaining homoionic clays does not deteriorate their structure. The value of the interlayer distance d001obtained from XRD depends directly on the cation radius. IR spectra recorded on our montmorillonite reveals that the area ratio νOH/νSiO peaks which corresponds to the amount of adsorbed water under room atmosphere follows the sequence: K >Rb> Cs > Li > Na In accordance the evolution observed for the desorption enthalpies. The adsorption and desorption isotherms show that the nature of the compensating cation considerably changes the adsorbed / desorbed amount for a given water relative pressure. Thus, the total amount of water adsorbed at P/P0 = 0.5 follows the same sequence.

The response of micrometric pseudo-single crystals of β-H2NiO2, deposited on an Au substrate and submitted to high rate charge/discharge cycling under controlled current conditions, is studied by in situ μ-Raman spectroscopy. The intensities of the Raman background and of the hydroxyl stretching band are used to probe in time the single-particle surface and bulk oxidation states respectively. Results, obtained in the absence of electrical binders and chemical dopants, substantiate previous electrochemical investigations suggesting that the occurrence of the nickel electrode activation process is related to the formation of a thin surface limiting layer hindering the active material capacity to store and deliver energy. The feasibility of in situ μ-Raman spectroscopy on nickel hydroxide single particles submitted to electrochemical operation is demonstrated for the first time.

Three ensembles designed to investigate condensed matter in complex environments have been developed recently on the AILES beamline at SOLEIL. They have been exploited for studies aiming at understanding the properties of water molecules and their network in various confining systems, namely:- a hydration and temperature-controlled cell for the study of water confined in nanoporous Vycor,- a high pressure set-up allowing the study of the evolution of water molecules network trapped in Faujasite through the pressure-induced amorphisation of the matrix material,- a temperature resolved electrochemical cell used to record FIR difference spectra of metalloproteins interacting with water molecules.By combining the high infrared flux and collimation of the AILES beamline with these optimized sample environments, it is possible to measure the infrared and THz spectra for minute quantities of samples in precise physical conditions.
